Greetings,
A tip of the hat to our friends from France this Bastille Day weekend. Let them eat cake while they sing and dance. Vive la révolution. Let the waiters race around with trays full of fine wine in comical fashion. Tchin-Tchin. À votre santé!
We find a surprising assortment of fine opportunities in the coming days; not exactly the mid-summer doldrums. Have a look at this week’s list and click on the calendar anytime to stay abreast of the embarrassment of riches we call Great Gables Events.

Finding Mona Lisa at the Miracle Theatre
In his newest play, Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever explores the history of the world’s most famous painting, including Leonardo da Vinci’s meeting of Senora del Giocondo (Mona Lisa) and his masterful creation of her indelible countenance. This historical, funny and intriguing new piece presents highlights throughout the painting’s infamous past, including her vandalism, her theft, her journey to America (at the request of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy) and the various places she spent her storied lifespan, including hanging in Napoleon’s bedroom, before her final resting place at the Louvre. The play continues through August 13. The Miracle Theatre is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Showtimes are Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, plus Sunday at 3pm. Nicole Kidman in The Beguiled at Gables Cinema
An injured Union soldier (Colin Farrell) arrives at an all-female Southern boarding school during the Civil War, whose owner and headmistress is Martha Farnsworth (Nicole Kidman). Soon, sexual tensions lead to dangerous rivalries as the women tend to his wounds and offer him shelter and companionship. By the time director Sofia Coppola unveils her haunting final shot and lets it linger for a minute, her wildly thrilling new movie has made one thing very clear: Even the most prim and possessed of women have always had needs, but men ought to be careful who they mess with. Kidman won a Special Prize at last month’s Cannes Film Festival, where Coppola became the second woman ever to win the Best Director award. The Beguiled is one of the first must-sees of the summer. Tickets are $15 general admission and $12 for cinema members. Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the web site for details. http://www.gablescinema.org
