Amnesia at Gables Cinema
When Jo comes to Ibiza to be a DJ at the club Amnesia, he befriends Martha (Marthe Keller in a career-capping performance) a solitary woman who’s trying to forget her past. As their friendship deepens into intimacy, Martha puts everything she has lived by into question. Director Barbet Schroeder is an indispensable figure in world cinema, as producer of films as varied as Eric Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales and Nestor Almendros’ Conducta Impropia; and as director of Oscar-nominated films such as Barfly and Reversal of Fortune. His new opus is a meditation on Germany’s responsibility for its past. How does one protest one of the most unspeakably terrible events in human history, especially when one’s compatriots were active participants in the atrocity? The building blocks of Jo’s electronic music are like the shards of the life Martha has discarded. Amnesia is a haunting masterwork where willful loss of memory is a symptom of denial. Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the web site for details. http://www.gablescinema.org

The Epic Dunkirk continues in 70mm
The nerve-racking war thriller Dunkirk is the movie Christopher Nolan’s entire career has been building up to, in ways that even he may not have realized. He’s taken the British Expeditionary Force’s 1940 evacuation from France, early in World War II — a moment of heroism-in-defeat that has become an integral part of Britain’s vision of itself — and turned it into a nesting doll of increasingly breathless ticking-clock narratives. Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the web site for details. http://www.gablescinema.org
Informed Consent at GableStage
Morality and bioethics collide on stage. With genomic breakthroughs happening at breakneck speed, we can learn more about what our futures may hold than ever before. But how much should we know? And who gets to decide? An electrifying new play by Deborah Zoe Laufer, one of the most exciting voices in American theater, Informed Consent is a powerful drama about one woman’s quest to answer the mysteries of science and her own life. Inspired by a landmark court case between one of the country’s largest universities and a Native American tribe based in the Grand Canyon, Informed Consent takes us into the personal and national debate about science v. belief, and whether our genetics defines our fate. The play begins this weekend and continues through August 27. GableStage is located at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Ave. Call 305-445-1119. http://www.gablestage.org
Final Curtain: Finding Mona Lisa at the Miracle Theatre
In his newest play, Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever explores the history of the world’s most famous painting, including Leonardo da Vinci’s meeting of Senora del Giocondo (Mona Lisa) and his masterful creation of her indelible countenance. This historical, funny and intriguing new piece presents highlights throughout the painting’s infamous past, including her vandalism, her theft, her journey to America (at the request of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy) and the various places she spent her storied lifespan, including hanging in Napoleon’s bedroom, before her final resting place at the Louvre. The play continues through August 13. The Miracle Theatre is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Showtimes are Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm, plus Sunday at 3pm.
