Cold War at Gables Cinema
Poland’s entry to the 2019 Academy Awards. Set between the late 1940s and the early 1960s, Cold War is a Soviet-era drama, but it inventively avoids the clichés of many a classical-minded World War II art film. The film tracks the tempestuous love between pianist Wiktor and singer Zula as they navigate the realities of living in both Poland and Paris, inside and outside of the Iron Curtain. http://www.gablescinema.com/
The Little Mermaid at Area Stage
Directed by innovative Giancarlo Rodaz, this telling of the classic Disney film turned stage musical The Little Mermaid re-imagines the setting and characters while keeping the essence of the beloved coming-of-age story of a young woman seeking more than what her current life has to offer. Area Stage Company is located at 1560 S. Dixie Hwy. Call 305-666-2078. http://www.areastagecompany.com
Indecent at GablesStage
By Pulitzer Prize Winner Paula Vogel. Inspired by the true events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance — a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel. Set at a time when waves of immigrants were changing the face of America, this play with music charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it. https://gablesguide.com/event/indecent-at-gablestage/2019-01-26/
