Saturday at 2pm Tuesday at 7:35pm The Executioner (El Verdugo) This masterpiece of black humor, beloved in Spain but too little seen elsewhere, threads a scathing critique of Franco-era values through a macabre farce about an undertaker who marries an executioner's daughter and reluctantly takes over her father's job so the family can keep their government-allotted apartment. Winner of the International Critics' Prize at Venice, this storied Italian / Spanish co-production underscores the comedic kinship between both countries as Italy's great Nino Manfredi (the undertaker) blends in seamlessly with Spain's laugh kings Jose "Pepe" Isbert (his father-in-law) and Jose Luis López Vázquez (his older brother). https://www.gablescinema.com/events/the-executioner/ |

Saturday at 9pm Wild Things at Gables Cinema Rich kid Kelly (Denise Richards) accuses her school's teacher of the year (Matt Dillon) of rape -- and her accusation is surprisingly corroborated by social outcast Suzie (Neve Campbell), who also claims she was a victim. What soon ensues is a lurid story of murder, intrigue, and sex as detective Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) uncovers a layered web of lies and seduction in the snobby Florida yachting enclave of Blue Bay. Wild Things is salacious, trashy, and features just the right kind of twisted plot that keeps you captivated. Filmed on location in Florida -- including the Everglades, where production briefly halted when a real dead body was discovered -- Wild Things perfectly encapsulates the sleazy side the state. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/wild-things/ |
