CODA at Gables Cinema

Starts Friday, August 20

CODA at Gables Cinema

Gifted with a voice that her parents can’t hear, seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones), is the sole hearing member of a deaf family -- a CODA, child of deaf adults. Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working the family's struggling fishing boat with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant) every day before school. But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself drawn to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Encouraged by her enthusiastic, tough-love choirmaster (Eugenio Derbez) to apply to a prestigious music school, Ruby finds herself torn between the obligations she feels to her family and the pursuit of her own dreams. CODA premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it captivated critics and audiences alike, eliciting a rapturous response and making history by being honored with all four of the top awards in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category including the U.S. Grand Jury Prize, the Directing Award, the Audience Award and a Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast (actors Matlin, Kotsur, and Durant are themselves deaf). https://www.gablescinema.com/events/coda/

The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs. Presented live via Crowdcast. https://booksandbooks.com/event/another-kind-of-eden-an-evening-with-james-lee-burke/

Blue Velvet at Gables Cinema

Saturday, August 21 at 9pm

Blue Velvet at Gables Cinema

Depending on who you listen to, David Lynch's Blue Velvet is either one of the great surrealist films of all-time or one of the great American films of all-time. Neither assertion contradicts the other. It is, hands down, the greatest film Lynch has made to date. In the first of a lifelong collaboration with Angelo Badalamenti, Lynch discovers a kindred spirit, uncannily adept at translating recurring themes of good vs evil, light vs darkness, and the loss of innocence into spare, haunting scores forever embedded to Lynch's vivid imagery in the collective unconscious. A mystery of sorts, Blue Velvet takes place in Lumberton, "the town that knows how much wood a woodchuck chucks." The discovery of a severed ear in the grass sets the sleuthing in motion and involves such soon-to-be Lynch stalwarts as Kyle McLachlan (returning home from college) and Laura Dern, every bit as wholesome as Nancy Drew. Add to the mix a suspicious torch singer (Isabella Rosellini) and Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), a pervert unmatched in the annals of depravity, and you have the makings of an instant cult classic. One would be hard-pressed to find another film that revels in the dark underbelly of seemingly idyllic Americana with such inspired frenzy and Baudelairian poetry. Blue Velvet brought rockabilly icon Roy Orbison back to international prominence near the end of an illustrious career. You will never listen to "In Dreams" quite the same way again. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/blue-velvet/

Searching for Mr. Rugoff

Tuesday, August 24 at 7:30pm

Searching for Mr. Rugoff

Here is he story of Donald Rugoff, the crazy genius behind Cinema 5, the mid-century theater chain and film distribution company based in New York City. Rugoff was a difficult (some would say impossible) person but was also the man who kicked art films into the mainstream with outrageous marketing schemes and pure bluster. His impact on cinema culture in the United States is inestimable, and his influence on the art film business -- from the studio classics divisions to the independent film movement to the rise of the Weinsteins -- is undeniable. Yet, mysteriously, Rugoff has become a virtually forgotten figure -- until now. The story is told through the eyes of former employee Ira Deutchman, who sets out to find the truth about the man who had such a major impact on his life, and to understand how such an important figure could have disappeared so completely. This screening will be introduced by film programmer Javier Chavez; following the screening, Javier will engage Searching for Mr. Rugoff director Ira Deutchman in conversation, who will join the event via Zoom. Thanks to Mr. Deutchman, 100% of all ticket revenue from this screening will go directly to the cinema to help offset the financial loss experienced over the past 17 months. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/searching-for-mr-rugoff/
