Great Gables Events Calendar Newsletter

Greetings ,

On Thursday, August 26 we celebrate Woman's Equality Day, and the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the United States' Constitution on August 26, 1920, granting women the right to vote for the first time -- a result of the women's suffrage movement in the country.

Next weekend, Labor Day falls on September 6 -- the first Monday of September -- which was initially organized to celebrate labor unions and their contributions to the United States' economy. The first Labor Day was held in 1882, and its origins stem from the Central Labor Union's desire to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894. For many of us, it also signals the end of the summer season -- as the days become shorter -- a last hurrah for family gatherings before the fall and winter holiday season begins.

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.

Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.

Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working the family's struggling fishing boat with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant) every day before school. But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself drawn to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Encouraged by her enthusiastic, tough-love choirmaster (Eugenio Derbez) to apply to a prestigious music school, Ruby finds herself torn between the obligations she feels to her family and the pursuit of her own dreams. CODA premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it captivated critics and audiences alike, eliciting a rapturous response and making history by being honored with all four of the top awards in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category including the U.S. Grand Jury Prize, the Directing Award, the Audience Award and a Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast (actors Matlin, Kotsur, and Durant are themselves deaf).
