Great Gables Events Calendar Newsletter

Greetings {name},

Sunday, July 25 will be Parents' Day, offering recognition for the role they play in their children’s lives.

The City Of Miami celebrates the 125th Anniversary on July 31 with a host of special events.

Thursday August 19 is National Aviation Day, observed in the United States on August 19 each year to celebrate the history and development of the aviation. It coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright who, together with his brother Wilbur, made significant contributions to powered flight.

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.

Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.

Le Cercle Rouge at Gables Cinema

Impassive faces, snap-brim hats, dangling cigarettes, sunglasses after dark, raincoats without rain... We’re unmistakably in the world of Melville, master of fate-haunted French gangster picture (Le Doulos, Bob Le Flambeur, Le Samouraï), here bringing together four archetypal tough guys for their appointment with destiny: prisoner-in-transit Gian Maria Volonté (Christ Stopped at Eboli); relentless Inspector Mattei (played by French comedy legend Bourvil); ex-cop Yves Montand; and Alain Delon (La Piscine, Mr. Klein), shrugging off two murder attempts on his first day out of the joint. The four join forces for a meticulously planned heist, a silent tour-de-force in the grand movie tradition of Topkapi, It’s the perfect follow-up to our “splash hit” La Piscine, starring Delon. Julie K. Brown - Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story

Friday, July 23 at 7:30pm

Julie K. Brown - Perversion of Justice

Enjoy an in-person evening with Julie K. Brown, discussing Perversion of Justice: The Jeffrey Epstein Story, with Ana Navarro at The Sanctuary of the Arts. A book purchase is required. For many years, billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s penchant for teenage girls was an open secret in the high society of Palm Beach, Florida, and Upper East Side, Manhattan. Charged in 2008 with soliciting prostitution from minors, Epstein was treated with unheard of leniency, dictating the terms of his non-prosecution. The media virtually ignored the failures of the criminal justice system, and Epstein’s friends and business partners brushed the allegations aside. But when in 2017 the U.S Attorney who approved Epstein’s plea deal, Alexander Acosta, was chosen by President Trump as Labor Secretary, reporter Julie K. Brown was compelled to ask questions. Perversion of Justice builds on Brown’s original award-winning series, showing the power of truth, the value of local reportage, and the tenacity of one woman in the face of the deep-seated corruption of powerful men. The Sanctuary of the Arts is located at 410 Andalusia Avenue. Attack the Block (35mm)

Saturday, July 24 at 9pm

Attack the Block (35mm)

From the producers of Shaun of the Dead, Attack the Block is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen street gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing project into a sci-fi battleground, the low-income apartment complex into a fortress under siege. And it turns a crazy mix of tough street kids into a team of kick ass heroes. It's inner city versus outer space and it's going to explode. Attack the Block -- which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year -- became an instant cult classic and features breakout roles by both John Boyega (who went on to play Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy) and Jodie Whittaker (the first woman to play the Doctor in Doctor Who). Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the web site for details. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/attack-the-block/

Fitzcarraldo at Gables Cinema

Sunday and Tuesday

Fitzcarraldo at Gables Cinema

Werner Herzog is the reigning champ of impossible real-life adventures undertaken in the name of cinema. And this masterpiece is the romantic flipside to Aguirre, the Wrath of God -- a backbreaking epic that ecstatically treads the line between a portrait of madness and a genuine expression of obsession. Fitzcarraldo fictionalizes the mad, true-life mission of South American rubber baron Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald to establish an opera house in the Peruvian jungle -- which can only be accomplished by hauling a gigantic river boat over a mountain. No special effects here: this is the real deal, with the impossible results executed before your eyes. Coral Gables Art Cinema is located at 260 Aragon. Call 786-385-9689 or visit the web site for details. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/fitzcarraldo/
