Greetings {name},

Monday, October 11 is Columbus Day -- as well as Discovers Day, Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples Day -- creating a three-day weekend. Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869.

Friday, October 15 is Boss's Day, recognizing those in supervisory positions.

Tuesday, October 19 on the Muslim calendar is known as Prophet's Day, often inviting non-Muslims to communal meals and lectures or discussions on Islam.

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.

Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.

El Planeta

Starts Friday, October 8

El Planeta

A dark comedy, El Planeta explores contemporary poverty, female desire, and the always complicated filial relationships of mothers and daughters. A daughter (played by the film's writer/director Amalia Ulman) forced to return home to the seaside town of Gijón after the death of her father reconnects with her eccentric mother (played Amalia's real-life mother, Ale Ulman), hustling to maintain the semblances of their middle-class lifestyle in the face of an impending eviction. Over the course of the week we watch the daughter’s hopes tested as she attempts to use her sexuality as a means of escape. Meanwhile the mother grifts her way to certain security -- the care of a jail cell. Shot in evocative black-and-white and brimming with deadpan humor, El Planeta marks the debut of a fresh, young voice who showcases her considerable talents both in front of and behind the camera. Official Selection Sundance Film Festival and New Directors/New Films. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/el-planeta/

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange

Saturday, October 9 at 9pm

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange

Experience the new 50th Anniversary 4K Restoration of a film classic. Teenager Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) has three hobbies: listening to Beethoven, rape, and ultra-violence. He whiles away the days in a dystopian Britain engaging in these activities with his three sycophantic droogs until he’s caught by police and sentenced to prison. There, Alex is subjected to a radical procedure dubbed the Ludovico Technique designed to cure him of his affinities. Filled with viciously violent imagery, A Clockwork Orange is hands down Stanley Kubrick’s most disturbing film, receiving an X rating for its original American release. At the same time, it is a chilling examination of youth, juvenile delinquency, and criminal rehabilitation. Winner of best film at the 1971 New York Film Critics Circle Awards. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/a-clockwork-orange/

Fellini - La Dolce Vita

Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday

Fellini - La Dolce Vita

Fellini's massive portrait of the excess that was Rome in the postwar economic boom of the 1950s is one of the most critically acclaimed -- and referential -- films of all time. Individual scenes are indelibly embedded in our collective memory, whether it be that of a statue of Christ hovering over ancient Roman ruins, suspended from a helicopter; or Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg cavorting in the Trevi Fountain late into the night. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/la-dolce-vita/

Gracias to her best friend, Alma, she gets a short-term job as a Caribbean cooking expert on a Spanish-language morning TV show.
