Thursday, July 14 is Bastille Day, a traditional holiday in French territories marking the anniversary of the fall on July 14, 1789, of the Bastille, in Paris.
The Third Sunday in July -- the 17th -- is National Ice Cream Day. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month.
Tuesday, July 19 is National Daiquiri Day, so set aside time to enjoy the original simple concoction of fresh lime juice with light dry rum and a touch of sugar, hand shaken to perfection and served neat in a cocktail glass.
Sunday, July 24 is Parent's Day, on the fourth Sunday of July each year, a chance to recognize, uplift and support the role of parents in bringing up their children. |

She longs for independence but is unsure how to achieve it, until the arrival of the rich and mysterious Javier seems to offer a way out. Flattered by Javier's praise and stories of traveling the world, Julija sees him as the solution to all her problems. But does his affection portend freedom, or something more sinister? The Fly (1986)
David Cronenberg’s biggest box-office hit stars Jeff Goldblum as a scientist tinkering with teleportation and Geena Davis as the reporter who falls in love with him. Summertime at Gables Cinema
With this sublimely bittersweet tale of romantic longing, director David Lean left behind the British soundstage to capture in radiant Technicolor the sun-splashed glory of Venice at the height of summer. In a tour de force of fearless vulnerability, Katharine Hepburn portrays the conflicting emotions that stir the heart of a lonely, middle-aged American tourist who is forced to confront her insecurities when she is drawn into a seemingly impossible affair with a charming Italian shopkeeper (Rossano Brazzi) amid the ancient city’s canals and piazzas. Lean’s personal favorite among his own films, Summertime is an exquisitely tender evocation of the magic and melancholy of a fleeting, not-quite-fairy-tale romance. Beat the heat with Gables Cinema's Summer Matinee Series featuring 2-for-1 beer and wine with $8 tickets every Wednesday at 2pm. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/summertime/ |

Dead Ringers at Cosford Cinema
Arguably the most disturbing film in David Cronenberg’s body of work, this story of twin gynecologists (played by Jeremy Irons) playing a dangerous game with one of their patients (Genevieve Bujold) marked a transition for the director in terms of subject matter and style. Shot by cinematographer Peter Suschitzky in an unnervingly cool, remote palette (aside from some blood-red surgical suits) “Dead Ringers” qualifies more as a psychological study than a horror film, although horror is what you’re left feeling as the brothers descend into drug addiction, their carefully manicured lives fraying into chaos. Cosford Cinema is located on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom building on UM campus. Cash only. Call 305-284-4861. https://cosfordcinema.com/event/dead-ringers-1988/ |
