Monday, September 5, the first Monday in September, is Labor Day, capping a weekend of traditional gatherings and celebrations, honoring the positive achievements of the American labor movement for workers' rights and a symbolic end of the summer season.
Sunday, September 11 is Patriot Day, with a moment of silence at 8:46am commemorating the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Patriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775.
The First Sunday of September following Labor Day (September 11) is also known as National Grandparents Day, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, honoring all grandparents. More than four million greeting cards are sent within the United States each year on National Grandparents Day.
The Third Friday of September (September 16) is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, a time to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. |

Now Playing at GableStage
Fade by Tanya Saracho
Directed by Teo Castellanos, this witty dramatic comedy is about class, integrity, and culture. Lucia is understandably nervous. It's day one at her first TV writing job. As a Hispanic novelist, she may actually be the "diversity hire" she's heard whispers about. Uncertain whether she can make a place for herself in cutthroat Hollywood, she feels less alone when she meets Abel, the Latino janitor. They form a bond and share stories, but it turns out that their friendship is not what Abel expects. The play continues through September 18. Get details and purchase tickets online. |

Starts Friday September 2
The Good Boss
Javier Bardem stars as Blanco, a charismatic proprietor awaiting the imminent visit from a committee that will decide if his company merits a local business excellence award. Working against the clock, Blanco pulls out all the stops to address and resolve issues with his employees, crossing every imaginable line in the process. A biting dark comedy, The Good Boss (El Buen Patrón) is a portrait of depersonalization and the deterioration of labor relations, a landscape of a time in which outdated concepts such as solidarity, ethics or the common good seem to have been erased from the employment map, only to be replaced by the logic of profit and precariousness. Enjoy a taste of traditional Spanish tapas from La Taberna Giralda, classic cocktails from Bacardi and sweet mini indulgences from Seasons 52 at the red carpet opening night reception on Friday, September 2 at 7pm, followed by the film at 8pm. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/the-good-boss/ |

Saturday and Sunday at 9:30pm
The Room
Everything seems to be going well for Johnny. He's a successful banker, and he's madly in love with his girlfriend Lisa —but when Lisa grows tired of her life with Johnny, she seduces his best friend Mark and weaves a web of betrayal that will tear Johnny apart and shake the very foundations of...The Room! It's hard to believe that Tommy Wiseau's strangely fascinating and completely bewildering magnum opus is almost 20 years old. Those who panned the film during its initial release couldn't have foreseen that it would take on a life of its own and garner such an enthusiastic cult following. Nor did anyone expect that it would spawn a New York Times bestselling book, The Disaster Artist, and its Academy Award winning film adaptation. The Friday showing will include an extended Q&A with Greg Sestero, star of The Room and author of the New York Times bestseller The Disaster Artist, a live script reading of the original unedited draft of The Room and a screening of the movie itself. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/the-room/ |
