Bright Star at Miracle Theatre

Now Playing through April 16

Bright Star at Miracle Theatre

From Grammy winners Steve Martin and Edie Brickell comes Bright Star, the new musical that brings a fresh breeze to the theater, a sweeping tale of love and redemption, set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past -- and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. With beautiful melodies and powerfully moving characters, the story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tightly in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful. Get details and purchase tickets online.

The Lost King

Starts Friday

The Lost King

$1 admission on April Fools Day. In the archaeological find of a century, the remains of King Richard III -- presumed scattered over 500 years ago -- were discovered under a parking lot in Leicester in 2012. The search was spearheaded by amateur historian Philippa Langley, whose passion and unrelenting research were met with skepticism by the academic establishment. Directed by two-time Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity, The Grifters) and starring two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Happy-Go-Lucky, Spencer) as Langley, The Lost King is the inspiring true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and took on Britain’s most eminent historians, forcing them to rethink the legacy of one of the most controversial rulers in English history. A tale of discovery, obsession, and stolen glory (both then and now), The Lost King is a magical adventure illuminated by one woman’s awakened sense of purpose.

Smoking Causes Coughing

Saturday, April 1 at 2pm

Smoking Causes Coughing

$1 admission on April Fools Day. A wildly inventive new French comedy from Quentin Dupieux, Smoking Causes Coughing follows the misadventures of a team of five superheroes known as the Tobacco Force -- Benzene (Gilles Lellouche), Nicotine (Anaïs Demoustier), Methanol (Vincent Lacoste), Mercury (Jean-Pascal Zadi), and Ammonia (Oulaya Amamra). After a devastating battle against a diabolical giant turtle, the Tobacco Force is sent on a mandatory week-long retreat to strengthen their decaying group cohesion. Their sojourn goes wonderfully well until Lézardin, Emperor of Evil, decides to annihilate planet Earth. French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux, also a musician and DJ known by the stage name Mr. Oizo, first made waves over two decades ago with the music video for his own hit song "Flat Beat." The clip, featuring a yellow puppet who became a viral sensation, foreshadowed the surreal and darkly comic feature films that he would go on to make: Rubber (2010), Wrong (2012), and Deerskin (2019). https://www.gablescinema.com/events/smoking-causes-coughing/

Dressed In Blue

Saturday, April 1 at 9pm

Dressed In Blue

Presented in observance of International Transgender Day of Visibility. One of the best trans films you’ve likely never heard of, Antonio Giménez-Rico’s landmark 1983 documentary Dressed in Blue (Vestida de Azul) explores the lives and loves of a group of six transgender women living in Madrid in the years following Spain’s transition to democracy. But more than that, it’s a loving portrait of a culture finally emerging from the shadows after being hidden for far too long. Antonio's portrait of these women gave them the freedom to portray their own stories with their own friends and family, but in a stylized scripted narrative framework with gorgeous cinematography by Teo Escamilla. The stories of Eva, Nacha, Loren, Josette, Reneé, and Tamara were never properly released outside of Spain and never available on home video, but finally Altered Innocence and Anus Films is proud to present this vital testament to just how far we’ve come -- and how far there’s still left to go. https://www.gablescinema.com/events/dressed-in-blue/
