Cal Thomas - A Watchman In The Night
Books & Books is thrilled to present an afternoon with Cal Thomas. A Watchman in the Night: What I’ve Seen Over 50 Years Reporting on America is a living history of our times, of who we were then and who we are now and who we might become (for better or worse) in the future, and a remarkable chronicle of modern American life. For over fifty years in journalism, Thomas has offered incisive, humorous and often corrective commentary to our social, political, and religious conversations. An early commitment to addressing publicly what he sees has marked Thomas' entire career. Cal has always called both parties, both sides of the American political divide, to account, to take the high road and to honor our civic and religious ideals with compatible behavior to the very best of our ability. This increasingly "radical" approach to public life has won him many friends on both sides of the political aisle, hundreds of thousands of faithful readers of his columns, and a continuous barrage of accolades and "hate mail," much of it charming when it is not too foul to repeat. Final Curtain This Weekend
Native Gardens at GableStage
In this sparkling comedy of good intentions and bad manners at GableStage, cultures and gardens clash, turning well-intentioned neighbors into feuding enemies. Pablo, a rising attorney, and doctoral candidate Tania, his very pregnant wife, have just purchased a home next to Frank and Virginia, a well-established D.C. couple with a prize-worthy English garden. But an impending barbeque for Pablo’s colleagues and a delicate disagreement over a long-standing fence line soon spirals into an all-out border dispute, exposing both couples’ notions of race, taste, class and privilege.

Cézanne: Portraits of a Life
Filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with additional interviews from experts and curators from MoMA in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps one of the least known and yet most important of all the Impressionists. Director Phil Grabsky expressed his deep appreciation for exploring artists from various historical periods and geographical locations. However, he acknowledged a recurring inclination to revisit the remarkably fruitful period of late 19th-century France. Grabsky emphasized the significance of artists like Monet, Renoir, Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, Matisse, Morisot, Cassatt, and Whistler in shaping the artistic landscape of that era. Notably, he emphasized the pivotal role played by Paul Cézanne, an artist hailed by Picasso as "the father of us all." Get details online. |

The Rules of The Game (1939)
Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Jean Renoir’s The Rules Of The Game is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a marquis’s country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut-bourgeois acquaintances. The film, which ranked 39th on the directors’ poll, has had a tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the audience at its 1939 premiere, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II; it wasn’t reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here. Get details online. |
