Saturday, June 1 is the start of Caribbean-American Heritage Month, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States.

Thursday, June 6 is the anniversary of D-Day, when 160,000 Allied troops, with 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft, invaded on the beaches of Normandy, France -- one of the most significant military campaigns of modern history.

Saturday, June 8 is the running of the Belmont Stakes horse race in Elmont, New York.

Wednesday, June 12 is Loving Day, the anniversary of a historic court decision eliminating state laws restricting interracial marriage.

Friday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.

Sunday, June 16 is Fathers Day, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives.

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants -- including restaurant row in the 100 block of Giralda. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.

Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.

Sebastian Junger - In My Time Of Dying

Thursday, May 30 at 7pm
Sebastian Junger - In My Time Of Dying
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. This experience spurred Junger -- a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical -- to undertake a scientific, philosophical, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? How do we grapple with phenomena that science may be unable to explain? And what happens to a person, emotionally and spiritually, when forced to reckon with such existential questions? In My Time of Dying is part medical drama, part searing autobiography, and part rational inquiry into the ultimate unknowable mystery. Get details online.
