Happy Fathers Day

Friday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.

Friday, June 14 is National Bourbon Day, taking its name from the historic Old Bourbon County of Kentucky, one of nine Virginia counties formed before Kentucky became a state in 1792. The process of making whiskey from corn in the South is an American tradition.

Sunday, June 16 is Fathers Day, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives.

Wednesday, June 19 is Juneteenth Day -- in the year 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. The traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda.

Thursday, June 20 is American Eagle Day, commemorating the day in 1782, when the bird was added to the official Seal of the United States.

Friday, June 21 is the day of the Summer Soltice, the moment the Sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Sunday, June 23 is United Nations’ Public Service Day, celebrating the value and virtue of service to the community.

Sunday, June 23 is also International Widows' Day, a time to consider the hardships that widows and their children often face.

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants -- including restaurant row in the 100 block of Giralda. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.

Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.
