Friday, June 6 is the anniversary of D-Day, when 160,000 Allied troops, with 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft, invaded on the beaches of Normandy, France -- one of the most significant military campaigns of modern history.
Friday, June 6, the first Friday in June, is National Doughnut Day, celebrating the home-made Salvation Army Doughnuts fed to troops during WWI. Hence, the term "doughboys." The Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor "Donut Dollies," the women who served doughnuts to soldiers with a "hole" lotta love.
Saturday, June 7 is the running of the Belmont Stakes horse race in Elmont, New York.
Tuesday, June 10 is National Iced Tea Day to celebrate one of summer's favorite refreshing drinks.
Thursday, June 12 is Loving Day, the anniversary of a historic court decision eliminating state laws restricting interracial marriage.
Friday, June 13, the second Friday in June, is National Movie Night, a chance to celebrate the tradition of movie nights with friends and family.
Saturday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.
Saturday, June 14 is the anniversary of the U.S. Army, founded on this day in 1775, when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army with six companies of expert riflemen in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia. The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington to command all the Continental forces and began laying the foundation for the American army.
Saturday, June 14 is National Bourbon Day, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the spirit of American Bourbon, a type of Whiskey made predominantly from corn, along with malted barley, wheat or rye, originally produced strictly in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives.
Wednesday, June 18, is National Fishing Day, encouraging us to drop a line -- in the nearest stream, pond, lake, or river. Taking a break from the daily routine to bait a hook and catch some fish can be a relaxing endeavor, especially with kids.
Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth Day -- in the year 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. The traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda.
Friday, June 20 is American Eagle Day, commemorating the day in 1782, when the bird was added to the official Seal of the United States.
Friday, June 20 is the day of the Summer Soltice, the moment the Sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere; and the longest day of sunlight. Sun rises at 6:30am and sets at 8:14pm. |

As always, make plans to enjoy the great outdoors in our little city. Walk down Miracle Mile, experience the live theatre and the best movies, browse the book stores, look into the art galleries and meet up with friends at the restaurants -- including restaurant row in the 100 block of Giralda. Visit the parks and public spaces to appreciate the bounties of nature.
Enjoy the best of Coral Gables in the coming days.

Starting Friday, June 6 from 6 to 9pm 25 Artworks from the 19th Century This exhibition at Cernuda Arte Gallery explores the development of art in Cuba via the three dominant genres of the colonial times, i.e. portraits, landscapes, and religious imagery. Other artists represented are the Belgian Henri Cleenewerck, the Spaniards Víctor Patricio de Landaluze, José Carol and Miguel Arias, along with the "criollos" Armando Menocal, Leopoldo Romañach, Federico Sulroca, and Antonio Rodríguez Morey. Friday, June 6 at 8pm Mainly Mozart - Postcards from Vienna Postcards from Vienna offers an intimate, emotionally resonant portrait of a city that has shaped the very soul of classical music. Performed by violinist Joshua Brown, a laureate of the 2024 Queen Elisabeth Competition, and pianist Marina Radiushina, acclaimed for her expressive artistry and depth, this program traces Vienna’s musical legacy through four distinct lenses—each a personal letter from a different moment in time. Mozart’s Violin Sonata in B-flat Major, K. 454, written for a celebrated female violinist, captures the balance and elegance of the Classical era. With Schubert’s Rondo in B minor, we enter the expressive heart of early Romanticism. Fritz Kreisler’s sentimental gems Liebesleid and Liebesfreud offer a nostalgic echo of Vienna’s golden age. Finally, Brahms’ Sonata in D minor, written in the twilight of the 19th century, brings storm and tenderness into sharp focus—a deeply personal work that carries Vienna’s past into an uncertain modernity. Together, these works form a mosaic of longing, beauty, and memory—echoes of a city where music was, and still is, a language of the soul. The performance takes place at UM's Knight Innovation Center, Newman Recital Hall. Get details online. |

Gone, but not forgotten, this iconic shrimp shack location -- hidden in plain sight at the end of the road on Virginia Key -- was ostensibly a simple place for fishermen to buy live shrimp bait, but it was so much more. To the regular customers, it was a place to buy smoked fish and cold beer, play bocce ball and relax aside a beautiful natural lagoon. To the movie, television and photography industries, it was an authentic outdoor set that mimicked an island fishing village. To the gregarious proprietor James "Jimbo" Luznar, it was a family business that attracted a cast of interesting characters, and a place to host friends and neighbors apart from the hustle-bustle of Greater Miami.
