Friday, June 13, the second Friday in June, is National Movie Night, a chance to celebrate the tradition of movie nights with friends and family.
Saturday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.
Saturday, June 14 is the anniversary of the U.S. Army, founded on this day in 1775, when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army with six companies of expert riflemen in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia. The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington to command all the Continental forces and began laying the foundation for the American army.
Saturday, June 14 is National Bourbon Day, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the spirit of American Bourbon, a type of Whiskey made predominantly from corn, along with malted barley, wheat or rye, originally produced strictly in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Sunday, June 15 is Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives.
Wednesday, June 18, is National Fishing Day, encouraging us to drop a line -- in the nearest stream, pond, lake, or river. Taking a break from the daily routine to bait a hook and catch some fish can be a relaxing endeavor, especially with kids.
Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth Day -- in the year 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. The traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda.
Friday, June 20 is American Eagle Day, commemorating the day in 1782, when the bird was added to the official Seal of the United States.
Friday, June 20 is the day of the Summer Soltice, the moment the Sun is directly above the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere; and the longest day of sunlight. Sun rises at 6:30am and sets at 8:14pm. |

To the regular customers, it was a place to buy smoked fish and cold beer, play bocce ball and relax aside a beautiful natural lagoon. To the movie, television and photography industries, it was an authentic outdoor set that mimicked an island fishing village. Sunday, June 15 at 5pm Sierra Club - A Look Back at Old Smokey In the heart of Coconut Grove, an incinerator operated for nearly five decades from the 1926 to 1970, spewing toxic ash laden with chemicals on to playgrounds and schools, and across the West Coconut Grove neighborhood, as well as parts of neighboring Coral Gables. When "Old Smokey" belched out clouds of ash laden with harmful chemicals such as dioxins and arsenic, those toxins did not simply disappear. Rather, they covered the community, contaminating the soil, where they remain until removed. Watch a documentary produced by University of Miami that looks at the impact that burning garbage had on our community. Even though this incinerator has not been in operation for 55 years, it serves as a reminder why no one wants an incinerator in their backyard. As we prepare for next month’s commission meeting, it is important that we consider how the location of the Waste Recovery Site will affect all of us. The Pot-Luck meal will begin at 5pm; meeting starts at 6pm at Coral Gables Congregational Church. Get details online. |
