Friday, June 12, the second Friday in June, is National Movie Night, a chance to celebrate the tradition of movie nights with friends and family.
Sunday, June 14 is Flag Day, honoring the United States flag commemorating the flag’s adoption on June 14, 1777. Each of the 50 stars represents one of the 50 states in the United States and the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that became the first states in the Union.
Sunday, June 14 is the anniversary of the U.S. Army, founded on this day in 1775, when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army with six companies of expert riflemen in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia. The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington to command all the Continental forces and began laying the foundation for the American army.
Sunday, June 14 is National Bourbon Day, dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the spirit of American Bourbon, a type of Whiskey made predominantly from corn, along with malted barley, wheat or rye, originally produced strictly in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
Thursday, June 18, is National Fishing Day, encouraging us to drop a line -- in the nearest stream, pond, lake, or river. Taking a break from the daily routine to bait a hook and catch some fish can be a relaxing endeavor, especially with kids.
Friday, June 19 is Juneteenth Day -- in the year 1865, Union soldiers arrived to take control of Texas and enforce the emancipation of slaves in the state. The traditional drink on Juneteenth is Big Red soda.
Sunday, June 21 is Father's Day, the third Sunday in June, celebrating the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. |

Thursday, June 18 at 8pm Robert K. Brigham - This Is a True War Story War historian and professor of history at Vassar College, Robert K. Brigham discusses his new book, This Is a True War Story, a stunning and admirably poignant memoir blending social critiques of war, family dynamics, and the American foster and adoption system, with personal vulnerability. Robert K. Brigham has devoted his academic career to being a Vietnam War historian, and at age fifty-eight, he learned that his biological father was Marine Corps photographer Bruce Atwell, a man whose work Brigham had admired, studied, and incorporated into lectures for years. Brigham not only reveals his own history as an adoptee but opens a startlingly fresh vantage on the fragility of American families; the power of social norms and taboos to shape lives; and the forces that inequitably disrupt families, not least of them war. The result is an accessible and moving book that is at once both a powerful personal story and an illuminating social critique. Get details online. |
